New Year’s Day in Pignon
Seneque Obin (Haitian, 1893-1977), Vowing to Abolish Slavery
Traditionally, January first is a very special day for Haitians around the world. It is a change to the year where everyone says, « have a good and happy new year ». It is always a long-waited day.
First, on January first, Haitians drink a special soup made of vegetable broth, called Giraumon.
Then, on this day, we remember the Independence of our country which was first proclaimed at Gonaives on January 1st, 1804, thanks to our national heroes such as Dessalines, Petion, and Christophe.
Because of this, the city of Gonaives is receiving a lot of people from all around the country, particularly government officials (like the President) to celebrate this day.
Thank you.
